Does Anyone Make Money on Spoonflower?

Does anyone actually make any money on Spoonflower? That was my biggest question when I first started. Not surprisingly, I couldn't really find an answer. There are so many variables but I would still like to see how others are doing, so maybe you are interested too!

I started my Spoonflower journey in April 2022, so bang on 3 years ago now. So, I'll break down how my sales progressed over the last three years.

Let's go year by year and see how it panned out! All numbers will be in US dollars as that is how Spoonflower pays me. Sorry Kiwi's but having to convert it all will be a pain!

Sales in 2022

My first sale came on June 27th a whopping $1.10 for a fat quarter of 'Juicy Bright Orange Slices'.

It was my only sale in June...but to have a sale in 3 months seemed like a huge win. Especially when others online had not made their first sale in much longer or even at all. So don't get discouraged! And so this post doesn't drag on for ages...here is the rest by number of sales per month.

July - 1 Sale
August - 0 Sales
September - 4 Sales
October - 7 Sales
November - 1 Sale
December - 1 Sale

So that is a total of 15 sales over 9 months for a whopping total on $25.80!

Total for 2022 - 15 Sales for $25.80 Commission

Sales in 2023

I was feeling good, after my new hobby was at least not costing me a fortune. My goal was to earn enough to be able to pay for the swatches that were required to be able to sell your designs. Clearly I did not the first year, but I was convinced I would.

My first sale for 2023 was a test swatch of design 'Floral Geometric Muted Green Large' on peel and stick wallpaper.

So let's get straight into it!

January - 7 Sales
February - 6 Sales
March - 0 Sales
April - 3 Sales
May - 6 Sales
June - 4 Sales
July - 5 Sale
August - 5 Sales
September - 7 Sales
October - 3 Sales
November - 2 Sale
December - 8 Sale

So that is a total of 56 sales for a total on $109.31. With one super exciting sale of 16 yards of fabric in one go.

Total for 2023 - 56 Sales for $109.31 Commission

Sales in 2024

Now the third year, when things started to pick up. The first sale this year was 2 meters of design 'Serene Soft Green Cream Wave Swirl Design'. This design was one of my top performers after placing 27th in the Serene Wallscapes design challenge in December 2023.

January - 18 Sales
February - 7 Sales
March - 7 Sales
April - 13 Sales
May - 18 Sales
June - 16 Sales
July - 6 Sale
August - 13 Sales
September - 6 Sales
October - 9 Sales
November - 11 Sale
December - 13 Sale

So that is a total of 137 sales for a total on $435.50.

Total for 2024 - 56 Sales for $435.50 Commission

Phew! That was a task for a spreadsheet and a lot of patience!

At the start of this journey surface design was completely new to me. The learning curve was steep, exciting and best of all the start of a great new hobby. So as you can see, I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon but with online proofing my design hobby is at least running at a profit.

Thank you for getting this far!

Welcome to my Spoonflower Journey

Welcome! I am starting this blog to share my journey into surface design in April of 2022, predominantly focusing on Spoonflower. I had so many questions when I first started that I struggled to find answers for. The most pressing question was, does anyone actually make any money selling designs on Spoonflower? So in the interests of transparency and sharing information I am planning to document how my earnings are progressing (slowly!) since my start in Spoonflower.

My Spoonflower Design Challenge Results

So in the interests of honesty and sharing, here are my top 5 and bottom 5 design challenge entries. With the exception of 5, including the very first as a rather disappointed me deleted them long ago. I have never placed in the top 10 but am proud to have made to top 100 four times...so far! I have a total of 61 design challenge entries over the last three years. So I feel another spreadsheet coming on! The simplest way to decide the rankings would be placings, but I don't think getting 50th out of 100 designs is quite the same as getting 50th out of 1000. So, I will have to crack out the math and give each design a ranking. Luckily as much as I love surface design, I also LOVE math! I have not used the vote counts to decide rankings and I will follow up with a post with a full table of all results. Let's get straight into it! Top 5 Design Placings Why not start with what I am proud of right? At least those who don't make it to the end won't see the worst performers fi...

Are Spoonflower Design Challenges Worth it?

Without beating around the bush...YES!! The design challenges are definitely worth it. Even if it can be humbling to see a design you thought would do really well...well flop. There is still so much to gain from joining in the challenges. At the end of this post you will see a table showing all my design entries in order from best to worst performing over the past three years. I have used the placing and total entries for the challenge to give each design a rank. The higher the rank the better the design faired. Similar to a percentage or percentile if a design's rank is 60 it means it scored higher than 60% of all designs. For any fellow math lovers who want the calculations, the top design Serene Soft Green Cream Waves placed 27th out of 1298. So the calculation I used was 100-(27/1298*100) = 97.92. Now moving right along!
